"When are you chatting with Haim?" a text arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

However, there remains a key snag: I also desires to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are far from alone. Several famous supporters have publicly coveted the honor.

One thing is obvious something is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey doing sets at small eateries with their parents. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy Award contenders.

Similar to the greatest ensembles, they're a tight-knit gang. Their music videos frequently depict them walking in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such boundless exuberance you inevitably think, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'After your show, I got a bass'," says Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That's the greatest compliment. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire others to form a group."

"And thus all are welcome to be the next member of Haim."

Grammy Recognition

The trio have called into a break, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I follow the lists every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the honor resonates with the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant step," adds Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the women that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The record emerged from a phase of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that strange liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The themes track endings and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them determining in the moment who they aspire to be.

"I love summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to actively work on shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That developed resilience required a fresh approach – more raw and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Camaraderie

The band's honesty fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic horror stories.

Someone left Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Future

One can easily sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their standing in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an worldwide audience.

Yet the band will always be their primary focus.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was four," says Alana. "There is no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still kicking."
