An Forecasting Platform User Profited $436,000 from Bets on Maduro's Downfall.
A trader profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was officially announced, sparking debate about potential gains made from inside knowledge of the event.
Market Movement in Wagers
Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the close of the month surged in the time leading up to Donald Trump announced on Saturday that Maduro had been seized.
A single trader, which joined the platform recently and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $436,000 from a starting bet of $32,537.
It remains unclear. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Probability Spikes Before Announcement
Platform data shows that users estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.
Yet these probabilities had increased to 11% by late Friday night and surged in the first hours of Saturday, pointing to a sharp shift in betting activity right before the official statement was made.
"This specific wager has all the signs of a trade based on confidential knowledge," said Dennis Kelleher.
Several of other platform users also made tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.
Legal Questions Grows
Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.
A new rule introduced on the start of the week seeks to ban federal workers from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a wager.
Market Background
Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in the past few years, with traders able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to political events.
The industry faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. However it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.
Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the prediction market space.
An official representative for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
