Colombian President Says 'I Shall Return to Arms Once More' if United States Intervenes Militarily.

Donald Trump along with his Colombian counterpart have escalated the volume of their exchange, heightening tensions between the two countries after American military units targeted Venezuela to remove the leader of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He has cocaine mills and processing labs and that won't last much longer," the US president stated.

Growing Rhetoric coupled with Claims

Speaking to the press over the weekend, Trump hinted at comparable armed intervention against Colombia, claiming the nation faces serious problems and governed by an unwell individual who enjoys creating the drug and selling it to the US."

Although Colombia stands as the world’s largest cocaine-producing country, authorities have found no indication linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is in any way tied to the illicit industry.

A Deteriorating Alliance

The country for decades served as a staunch collaborator of the United States in the struggle against narcotics trade and enjoyed bipartisan support from American politicians, but relations have soured significantly since Trump was elected.

Colombia’s illicit drug economy is largely controlled by illegal armed groups including one major cartel, another leftist insurgency and breakaway groups of the former Farc guerrillas, the majority of whose members disbanded after a landmark accord.

The President's Defiant Answer

Upon being questioned whether a military operation like that in Venezuela was a possibility for Colombia, Trump replied: "That seems like a good idea to me."

President Petro, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who disarmed in the last century, rejected the accusations. "I am neither illegitimate nor am I involved in narcotics," he stated.

"He comments without knowledge. Stop slandering me," he wrote in a message.

"Should American forces attack peasants, they will become a multitude of fighters across the countryside. If they capture the nation's leader, which a large part of the country holds in high esteem, they will provoke the fierce spirit of the people," the president cautioned.

From Insurgent to Statesman

He passed some years as a young man as a member in the left-wing M-19 armed organization although reports indicate that he never took part in armed clashes. Following his disarmament, he was involved in drafting a new constitution in 1991 and eventually served as a respected lawmaker. He served as mayor of Bogotá prior to his election president.

"I made a vow to abstain from using arms again ... but for the homeland I shall resume weapons once more," he affirmed.

Reinforced Protection along with Cross-Political Condemnation

The Colombian defence minister stated that the national leader's protection team was strengthened.

A segment of Colombia’s conservative opposition have expressed support with the US president, yet figures spanning the ideological divide have denounced the possibility of an invasion against their nation.

Diplomatic and Financial Sanctions

The US withdrew the president's entry visa subsequent to he urged US troops to disobey orders that violate law. In October, authorities imposed asset freezes on Petro, the first lady and a number of associates.

At the same time the US was building up its troop levels in the Caribbean and targeting alleged narcotics traffickers to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets have also conducted operations on boats off the Pacific coast off the Colombian coast.
