Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in multiple interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead with three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
