The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
