British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several approach shafts leading to the depot... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - imposed militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," Healey commented. "They were part of thousands of UK service members stationed over the holidays. This operation, to remove militants who threaten our security, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the US military carried out what it termed a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
